The Results Are In, Santa Barbara Wins!

Costa Obliterates Hoekstra’s Record

Article by Ron Moormeister

The first year of a new local meet the promoter might hope to get 25 or 30 lifters to attend. The 65 entries for the USPA sanctioned Santa Barbara Open held April 30th at the Earl Warren Showgrounds certainly exceeded the expectations of meet co-directors Steve Denison, and Kevin Fisher.

While Denison did his usual great job of providing platforms, equipment, referees, and running the scorers table, Kevin Fisher was hard at work promoting the meet to Santa Barbara area gyms and high school coaches. San Marcos High School, and Fisher Strength and Health sent a score of first time lifters who were well prepared… strong and knew how to conduct themselves on the platform.

The participants were well supported by family and friends in attendance. The meet was a featured event with the Santa Barbara Fair & Expo, so many people who had never seen a powerlifting meet came by to see what was going on and stayed to watch the excitement of our sport.

The USPA thanks the participants, the enthusiastic supporters, the hard working referees, the spotters and loaders who worked so hard to keep the lifters safe, and Gina and Mike Stein who kept the meet moving in their roles as scorekeeper and expeditor. Their hard work and enthusiasm should make this just the first of what will be an annual event.

Dozens of records were set by junior, open, and master lifters. One big one was by Ricardo Costa, who broke Scott Hoekstra’s submaster record with a clean 650 lb. bench press. Ricardo, and Scott are training partners who have been known to engage in a little smack talk, so we expect to see some fiery competition between them at the USPA Nationals in Coasta Mesa, CA, July 1-3.

SrA. Dan Johnson Memorial and Patriotic Games Challenge

May 21, 2011 is the date to save for the Senior Airman Dan Johnson Memorial Patriotic Games Challenge!  This is the meet with a purpose!  This is the meet where we have the opportunity to honor those veterans that fought for our freedom so we could have this meet the way we want to have it!  This is the meet where we take a few minutes of our lifting time to thank so many brave men and women who have fought for our great country, the USA.

This year we are honoring the Air Force and a local young man, SrA. Dan Johnson, 23, who gave his life in Afghanistan Oct. 5, 2010 while trying to disarm an explosive device west of Kandahar.  The device detonated before it could be made safe killing SrA. Johnson and injuring Tech Sgt. Robert Butler.  He leaves behind his wife Kristen, his parents, brothers and sister-in-laws, grandmother, niece and nephew, and his in-laws.

We are also honoring veterans from past wars including Iraq.  We have WWII veterans, including a Tuskegee airman and a B17 Bomber Co-Pilot, a Vietnam War veteran whose daughter will be lifting in the meet, a Korean War veteran and an Iraq veteran.

We have not forgotten our fallen officers, Sgt. Robert Ramos, a motorcycle officer with the Santa Maria Police department and Scott Williams, a Federal Corrections Officer.  Both officers died in the line of duty and have yet to have justice served.  We will be having the Robert Ramos/Scott Williams Memorial Bench Press open to any current or retired military/police/federal corrections officers entered in our meet for no additional charge.

As a new event this year, we will be having the Little Britches Deadlift competition.  This event is open to the child or grandchild of a lifter entered in our meet between the ages of 5 and 12.  Depending on how many entries we get, the child will get 1-3 lifts and will be judged in age groups with the best lift in each age group getting a trophy and the rest a ribbon.  All will get a bag of goodies for participating!  They will be the finale before awards are given out.

Babes in Frames Photography will be taking photos during the meet.  Photographer, Kristi Williams, wife of fallen officer Scott Williams, will offer a package of photos for $20.  The package will include 1 8″x10″, 2 4″x6″, and a CD with all your photos on it.  I think you’ll agree this is an offer too good to pass up!

There will also be a 50/50 Raffle to benefit the SrA. Dan Johnson Memorial Fund, a raffle of some great prizes to benefit C.O.P.S. an organization that helps kids at risk, Food, and Fun!  You can find entry forms, fliers, and more info at www.uspla.com.

Texas State Chair

The USPA is pleased to announce that Chris Pappillion has accepted position of State Chair of Texas.  Chris has competed in powerlifting since the age of 15, where one of his football coaches took him to his first meet in Corpus Christi, Texas and he fell in love with the sport. Chris is currently ranked #1 on total on Powerlifting Watch in the 242, Single-ply division.  Chris won the USPF National Championship two years in a row, along with Best Lifter honors last year. He also was on the winning USA team at the WPF Worlds in Las Vegas, NV.

Chris says «I am happy to be a part of bringing powerlifting back to Texas, as it was in the 80’s and 90’s. Texas truly needs more meets so that lifters can compete, as well as have a set stage to do it on.  I feel that the USPA will be good for Texas and I will do whatever I need to do to help both the sport and association grow.»
